Pakistan Football team set to participate in 4 National tournament in Maldives alongside Sri Lanka & Bangladesh
The Pakistan national football team will travel to Malé this June to participate in the Diamond Jubilee Invitational Cup.
The four-nation tournament, scheduled to be held from June 1 to June 10 at the Galolhu National Stadium, is organized to mark 75 years of official football in the host country. The event will feature the national teams of the Maldives, Sri Lanka, the Bangladesh U23 team, and Pakistan.
At first, the Maldives federation invited Nepal; however, due to governance and football-related issues, they declined the offer. As a result, Bangladesh was invited. However, Bangladesh is set to face European side San Marino, so they will be sending their U-23 team for this tournament. Notably, these fixtures will be Pakistan’s first international friendlies since 2023, ending a significant gap in non-competitive action for the team.
According to recent reports, the Pakistan Football Federation plans to send a strong squad featuring several diaspora players rather than an experimental youth side. This approach aligns with head coach Nolberto Solano's strategy to build a competitive team and establish chemistry during a live tournament, helping to compensate for the current lack of a domestic professional league in Pakistan.
The PFF had alternative options for friendlies during this period. It looks like Pakistan opted to go for this tournament instead of a potential friendly against Azerbaijan. Competing against regional opponents in a tournament format aligns more closely with the team's immediate developmental goals and provides a more measured challenge. Participation in this tournament also serves as direct preparation for the upcoming SAFF Championship, allowing the coaching staff to evaluate the squad against familiar South Asian opposition.
The June FIFA window is largely occupied by World Cup qualifiers, which often makes it challenging for non-participating nations to schedule fixtures. Securing these matches provides Pakistan with necessary international minutes. Additionally, reports suggest that Somalia has extended an invitation to host Pakistan for a friendly match at the end of June. If accepted by the PFF, this would add another valuable fixture to the team's schedule before the international break concludes.
