Pakistan to Make Historic FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 Debut: Schedule, Format & Groups
The Pakistan men’s national football team is set for a landmark opportunity after officially accepting an invitation to compete in the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup. The Green Shirts will replace China in the tournament's premier division, marking a significant moment for Pakistani football
Scheduled to take place in Jakarta, Indonesia, from September 21 to October 6, the tournament will mark the Pakistan men's national team's first appearance in an official FIFA competition. It also comes just months after the women's national team featured in the FIFA Series earlier this year, reflecting the steady progress of Pakistan football and its growing presence on the international stage.
Jumping to Division One
The tournament will feature 14 teams split across two tiers, but Pakistan's placement has raised eyebrows in the best way possible.
Currently ranked 198th in the world, the rules technically dictate that Pakistan should be competing in the second-tier FIFA ASEAN Challenge Cup. However, in a major boost for the program, the Shaheens are set to compete directly in the top-tier Division One. They will be one of three invited teams joining Southeast Asia's elite in the main eight-team tournament in Indonesia, while the second-tier Challenge Cup will be hosted by Hong Kong, featuring nations like Brunei, Cambodia, and Myanmar.
This unexpected promotion throws Pakistan right into the deep end. Drawn into Division One Group B, they will face a grueling test against teams with significantly higher global standings: .Vietnam (Ranked 99th) .Thailand (Ranked 94th) .Philippines (Ranked 135th)
The Format
The tournament features eight teams split into two groups of four. Each team will play the other three sides in its group once, with the top team from each group advancing directly to the final.
Group A consists of hosts Indonesia, India, Malaysia, and Singapore, while Pakistan have been placed in the other group. Although Pakistan and India will not meet during the group stage, the tournament format still leaves open the possibility of a clash between the two rivals. After the group stage, teams that do not reach the final will play classification matches against teams from the opposite group. If Pakistan and India finish in the same position in their respective groups, they will face each other to determine their final tournament ranking.
Time to Dream
For the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF), this tournament is about much more than just making up the numbers. It represents a vital part of FIFA’s broader efforts to expand competitive opportunities for emerging football nations.
PFF President Syed Mohsen Gilani expressed his gratitude to FIFA President Gianni Infantino for the landmark invitation, noting that the 16-day window will provide the men's team with invaluable experience against some of Southeast Asia's strongest squads.
The Pakistan Football Federation is extremely thankful to FIFA president Gianni Infantino for presenting us with the opportunity to participate in our second-ever FIFA event,It is a step that reaffirms our commitment to provide our national teams with competitive matches at every opportunity possible
Emphasizing the ambition driving the team forward, Gilani added a clear message about the future of the sport in the country:
It is time to dream big. We are not content with playing in development competitions. Pakistan is ready to mix it with the big boys. Pakistan football has well and truly arrived at the global stage
